Out to Learn Willow provides both living willow and dried willow workshops for adults, children and young people within a variety of educational and community settings.

We work with:

  • Primary Schools
  • Secondary Schools
  • Community Groups
  • Youth Services
  • Other voluntary and statutory agencies
  • Public Event Organisers

We specialise in helping schools or community groups to develop their outdoor spaces using living willow structures or dried willow sculptures that naturally enhance school grounds or public places. We also offer a design and build service.

Our workshops are fun for both adults and children who love the hands-on experience of learning the ancient craft of willow weaving and taking a project home with them.

Based in South Wales, we run a variety of willow courses throughout the year from planting a living willow structure to the wonderful traditional skill of basketmaking.

We planted 12,000 willow saplings last winter, trained 320 teachers and worked with over 3500 children.

  1. Loved the Christmas Craft course today and can’t believe how much we made. The house will look great this year and has got me in the festive spirit. The mulled wine and mince pies were a welcome sight at 3pm.

I really am hooked and can highly recommend willow weaving to everyone. Have just booked my place on Hedgerow Hoops and Hearts in February. Can’t wait

Thank you Clare & Mel – you made me realise I do have some artistic talent !!

  2. Hello,
Love your blog page. Please can you tell me how I join your decoration course at Southerndown Church in December . I’m desperate to learn weaving but work full time looking for evening and weekend course. Hope you have a place.

    • Hi Heather

Glad you like to hear what we are up to! The Christmas courses have been incredibly popular but 2 people have just cancelled for Saturday 24th – would yo ulike one of those places?

      Be lovely to see you.

      Clare and Mel

  3. Hi Clare,

Thank you for a wonderful day at Dunraven Bay on Tuesday. The hedgerow hoops and hearts course was fab, loved every minute of it.

The instruction given was fantastic. You’ve given me so many ideas, I’m well and truly hooked now.

Oh and the banana loaf was brill too so a big thank you to who ever baked that.

  4. We have just cut back our willow trees and were wondering if you would like the willow, or if you know of anyone who does. We are in Newport.

  5. Would like some info on workshop for a primary school in Caerphilly please. To include prices and dates available in December.

    • Hi Claire
Our school craft workshops cost £295 for the day. That includes the willow and curling ribbon for decoration but most schools ask parents to donate leftover Christmas decorations to add to the creations on the day. An example school programme would be Reception/Year1 – Fesive star wands or tree hangings, Year 2 Festive Birdfeeders, Year 3 Simple Wreaths, year 4 and upwards Angels, stars and trees. We can work flexibly on the day with one class spending the day weaving a variety of items or several classes making 1 item per class. Hope this helps! Would be lovely to work with you! Things looking busy – the week of the 16th is good for us but we do have a smattering of earlier dates.
